Downtown Tampa To See New Protected Bike Lanes
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), along with the City of Tampa, has passed legislation to start construction on a protected cycle track in Downtown Tampa. This will be the first of its kind in the state and on a state road. The designated bike lane will span the north side of Jackson Street and stretch from Ashley Drive to Nebraska Avenue, allowing traffic to go both directions.
The ten-foot-wide lanes will be separated from automobile traffic by four-foot barriers. Turn lanes and pathways to side streets will be marked in bright green. This will remind cyclists and motorists to look out for each other.
Additionally, the state has agreed to re-pave and paint crosswalks and pedestrian ramps. Much needed upgrades by means of flashing lights and expanded walking space at intersections will be added.
Construction will begin this Autumn. All updates and roadways are set to be complete within a year.
